‘New Weaving Mill’ is an existing building, which was constructed in 1899, and is a part of postindustrial heritage of Łódź (Lodz, Poland), it creates the identity of this city. It is a relic of the textile industry, that was present here at its best in the years 1821-1914. The project was probably designed by a latvian architect P.Rübesahm.
The conservation and adaptation of this building was a huge challenge mainly due to the enormous size of it. The main design aims were settled after particular historical, monument values, landscape and communication analisyses. Collaboration – Arkadiusz Sarlej (IAU student). The project was done in autumn 2006.

‘Nowa Tkalnia’ to budynek wzniesiony w roku 1889, który jest jednym z wielu zabytków postindustrialnych w Łodzi, i tworzy tożsamość tego miasta. Był w stanie pomieścić 1914 krosien mechanicznych poruszanych maszyną parową o sile 1200. Projekt budynku wykonał zapewne łotewski architekt z Rygi, Paweł Rübesahm.
Projekt konserwacji oraz adaptacji budynku, był sporym wyzwaniem z uwagi na wielkość oraz rozległość całej budowli. Wytyczne projektowe zostały ustalone po szczegółowych analizach historycznych, walorów zabytkowych, krajobrazowych, komunikacyjnych itd. Współpraca – Arkadiusz Sarlej (student PŁ i IAU).
From october 2007 till now (june 2008) I am employed at the architectural office ’SZARCH Architects’ in Łódź, Poland. I am working there as an assistant designer of housing estates and large scale factories. Here you can see some of the works that I also worked on:

Od października 2007 do czerwca 2008 odbywałem praktykę biurową w łódzkiej pracowni ‘Staszewscy Ziółkowscy Architekci’, przy Placu Zwycięstwa 2. Pracowałem tam jako asystent przy projektach osiedli mieszkaniowych oraz wielko przestrzennych hal przemysłowych.
The theme of this particular design is the revaluation of a textile-mill area, that is located in the heart of small industrial town Pabianice (Poland). The idea is focused to create a mixture of different functions in the monumental and industrial surrounding, that is meant to become a new cultural-leisure-buisness centre of the city. The huge urban concept consists of: hotel, concert hall, small housing estate, shoping centre, restaurants and bars, museum, musical academy, swimming pools, spa, big volume car parkings, office buildings, sports and recreational areas (water-pond and park). Unfortunately the restructuring of this kind of historical areas lead to difficult compromises. Very often because of new functions and needs, some of the old and still valuable buildings have to be demolished, what can lead to the loss of the character of the place. In this project we tried to avoid this problem. Collaboration – Dagmara Pawłowska (IAU student). The project was made in spring 2007.

Tematem tego projektu jest rewitalizacja starego obszaru przemysłowego (zakładu włókienniczego), zlokalizowanego w centrum miasta Pabianic. Intencją było stworzenie mieszanki funkcji w otoczeniu przemysłowych zabytków, która stanie się nowym centrum kulturalno-handlowo-biznesowym miasta. Ogromny obszar składa się z: hotelu, sali koncertowej, mini-osiedla mieszkaniowego, centrum handlowego, lokali gastronomicznych, muzeów, szkoły muzycznej, basenów, spa, parkingów kubaturowych, biurowców, terenów rekreacyjnych (parki i stawy). Projekt zaowocował powstaniem mikstury części najbardziej wartościowych obiektów przemysłowych oraz koniecznej nowej architektury. Niestety przekształcenia tego typu wartościowych historycznie terenów, prowadzą do osiągnięcia trudnych kompromisów. Często poprzez wprowadzanie nowej architektury i funkcji, doprowadza się do wyburzenia starej zabudowy, co może doprowadzić do zatracenia charakteru miejsca. W tym projekcie staraliśmy się uniknąć podobnego efektu. Współpraca – Dagmara Pawłowska (studentka PŁ i IAU).
During august and september 2007 (two weeks) participation in the ‘XIIIth International Design Seminar’ organised by IUSS Pavia in Lucca in Italy, entitled ‘Urban culture and landscape renewal’. This seminar was an outstanding opportunity to participate in ‘international design teams’ that consisted of students from all over the world (Italy, China, Jordan, Tunisia, Malta, Poland and Switzerland). During two weeks working and practicing our skills, each of the group managed to come out with some great effects. Here you can see some of the works, that we managed to produce during that time (what is important that all of those works were handdrawn - no computer was used). The project’s topic was the adaptation and reconstruction of an old and abandoned hospital, located at the Fregionaia hill, near Lucca in Tuscany:

During october 2007, participation in the computer workshops teaching the Maya Autodesk software, run by arch. Tobias Schwinn (‘Skidmore Owings & Merrill’ – London), and in lectures of prof. Neil Leach (AA London, Bauhaus Dessau) called ‘Camouflage’ and ‘Digital Morphogenesis’. Those were three interesting days during we learned some basics of work in the Maya, a programme that allows algorithmic design techniques. Maya shows and creates totally different possibilities for designers, thanks to its scripting tools.

W trakcie października 2007 udział w warsztatach komputerowych uczących pracy w programie Maya Autodesk. Zajęcia z Maya prowadzone przez arch.Tobias’a Schwinn’a (z londyńskiej pracowni ‘Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’), uzupełnione teroretycznymi podstawami przez prof. Neil’a Leach’a (AA Londyn, Bauhaus Dessau) w trakcie wykładów pt. ‘Kamuflaż’ i ‘Cyfrowa morfogeneza’. W trakcie trzech krótkich dni poznaliśmy podstawy pracy w programie, który umożliwia zupełnie rewolucyjne możliwości w podejściu do projektowania architektury, głównie dzięki matematycznym narzędziom skryptowania.
During summer 2006 I was drawing up inventory of a monumental over 100 years old building in Łódź, where the first city’s power station was located (2d drawings, and 3d modeling). It was a though two-months practice. EC1 – is going to be the New Center of Łódź, according to the measurements and inventories, arch. Rob Krier is currently creating a new urban plan for this area. Podczas lata 2006 wykonywałem na zlecenie inwentaryzację części łódzkiej EC1. Budynki mają około 100 lat, są pierwszą łódzką elektrownią jeszcze z czasów fabrykanckich miasta. Według planów i wielu innyh inwentaryzacji obecnie są przeprowadzane konkursy architektoniczne, oraz słynny luksemburski architekt Rob Krier przygotował plan urbanistyczny dla tego obszaru, który ma się wkrótce stać nowym centrum Łodzi. Współpraca w trakcie inwentaryzacji – Dagmara Pawłowska (studentka PŁ i IAU).
1st Prize in the competition for the design of conference room, organised by the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning and Drahtzug Stein company. The competition took place in december 2006.

Distinction in the competition organised by the mayor of Głowno (Poland), for the design of the Freedom Square. The competition took place during february 2005. Collaboration in the project – Piotr Dróżka (IAU student) and Eryk Pajewski (ASP student).

Distinction in the student’s competition for the design of the Christmas Crib at the cathedral square in Łódź. The competition took place in december 2005 – january 2006. All competition entries were ment to be a kind of wooden structure, located in front of the city’ main cathedral. Collaboration in the project – Piotr Dróżka (IAU student).
