During august and september 2008 (22/08 – 06/09) participation and organization of the ‘XIVth International Design Seminar’ organised by IUSS Pavia and Technical University of Łódź (Politechnika Łódzka), entitled as usual ‘Urban culture and landscape renewal’. This year’s seminar theme was ‘Post-industrial challenges’, and it was organised in Lodz (Łódź), which is 3rd biggest city of Poland and used to be the biggest textile centre of the country since XIXth century. The international character of the seminar was provided by students and professors participating from four different countries: Poland, Italy, Tunisia and China.
The topic of this year’s project was transformation of a quarter of Lodz city, that incorporates post-industrial, housing, shopping and traditional market functions. The students’ attention was strongly focused at dealing with a monument located at the project site, which was 130 year old textile factory. It’s values and position at the project site were crucial for the designs. Below I would like to present some of the works and materials that appeared during the workshops. Please note that all of the projects were handdrawn – without usage of computers. This helped to create better discussion and flow of ideas between the students and professors.

Podczas sierpnia i września (22/08 – 06/09) udział i pomoc w organizacji czternastych warsztatów międzynarodowych: ‘XIVth International Design Seminar’, których głównymi organizatorami były dwie szkoły: Politechnika Łódzka (Instytut Architektury i Urbanistyki) oraz IUSS Pavia (Włochy). Głównym motywem warsztatów jak zwykle była ‘Kultura urbanistyczna oraz odnowa krajobrazu’, a tematem ‘Wyzwania obszarów poprzemysłowych’. Warsztaty zostały zoorganizowane w Łodzi, a międzynarodowy charakter zapewniły ekipy studentów i profesorów z czterech państw: Polski (Łódź), Włoch (Mediolan, Piza, Pavia), Tunezji (Tunis) oraz Chin (Szanghaj).
Tematem projektów było przekształcenie jednego z łódzkich kwartałów, w którego obrębie można wyróżnić funkcje poprzemysłowe, mieszkaniowe i handlowe. Uwaga uczestników została zwrócona szczególnie na konserwację i adaptację zabytkowego budynku fabryki włókienniczej mającej 130 lat. Jej walory i znaczenie dla miejsca miały kluczowy wpływ na kształt powstałych projektów.
Powyżej zamieszczam obrazki z warszatów. Wszystkie prace wykonano ręcznie, co miało pomóc w nawiązaniu owocnej dyskusji wśród grup projektowych.
During July 2008 participation in an international course for architecture students, called ‘Urban Strategies’ and organised by ‘NeA – estudio de arquitectura’ in Valencia, Spain. The theme of this year’s summerworkshop was ‘Peripheral Challenges’, derived from the proposed metropolitan development masterplan for Valencia. It dealt with the reconciliation of the different architectural and urban planning challenges around the municipal area of Valencia, in context of its integration with the surrounding metropolitan area and the recent preliminary version of the ¨Revision¨ of its general plan. During this three weeks students of architecture from 8 different countries: Italy, Poland, Germany, France, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, and finally, Spain, have participated. It was fruitful period, which produced six different design approach. Below you can see some of materials from the workshop.

Podczas lipca 2008 udział w pierwszy warsztatach międzynarodowych dla studentów architektury, organizowanych przez ‘NeA – Office for Architectural Networking’, w Walencji, Hiszpania. Tematem tegorocznych warsztatów były ‘Peripheral Challenges’, a praca uczestników polegała na zmierzeniu się z zagospodarowaniem trudnych terenów podmiejskich, ktróch przeznaczenie zostało już określone w nowym planie zagospodarowania miasta Walencji z roku 2008. W trakcie trzech tygodni studenci z ośmiu państw, Włoch, Polski, Niemiec, Argentyny, Arabii Saudyjskiej, Francji, Turcji oraz Hiszpanii zdołali stworzych pięć interesujących projektów, które skutecznie odpowiadały na zadane problemy.
During august and september 2007 (two weeks) participation in the ‘XIIIth International Design Seminar’ organised by IUSS Pavia in Lucca in Italy, entitled ‘Urban culture and landscape renewal’. This seminar was an outstanding opportunity to participate in ‘international design teams’ that consisted of students from all over the world (Italy, China, Jordan, Tunisia, Malta, Poland and Switzerland). During two weeks working and practicing our skills, each of the group managed to come out with some great effects. Here you can see some of the works, that we managed to produce during that time (what is important that all of those works were handdrawn - no computer was used). The project’s topic was the adaptation and reconstruction of an old and abandoned hospital, located at the Fregionaia hill, near Lucca in Tuscany:

During october 2007, participation in the computer workshops teaching the Maya Autodesk software, run by arch. Tobias Schwinn (‘Skidmore Owings & Merrill’ – London), and in lectures of prof. Neil Leach (AA London, Bauhaus Dessau) called ‘Camouflage’ and ‘Digital Morphogenesis’. Those were three interesting days during we learned some basics of work in the Maya, a programme that allows algorithmic design techniques. Maya shows and creates totally different possibilities for designers, thanks to its scripting tools.

W trakcie października 2007 udział w warsztatach komputerowych uczących pracy w programie Maya Autodesk. Zajęcia z Maya prowadzone przez arch.Tobias’a Schwinn’a (z londyńskiej pracowni ‘Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’), uzupełnione teroretycznymi podstawami przez prof. Neil’a Leach’a (AA Londyn, Bauhaus Dessau) w trakcie wykładów pt. ‘Kamuflaż’ i ‘Cyfrowa morfogeneza’. W trakcie trzech krótkich dni poznaliśmy podstawy pracy w programie, który umożliwia zupełnie rewolucyjne możliwości w podejściu do projektowania architektury, głównie dzięki matematycznym narzędziom skryptowania.
Participation in the ‘1st Nationwide Open Air Painting Workshops for Students of Architecture’ held in Chełmno (Poland) in july 2004. I received 1st Distinction Award for one of the drawings. Chełmno is an outstanding and fascinating small town, established in the Medieval Era. It has the longest and still existing city walls around the Old Town (about 2200m) in Poland, and also has lot’s of churches and picturesque places. A perfect place for an outdoor painting workshops.

Udział w “Pierwszych Ogólnopolskich Warsztatach Plenerowych Studentów Architektury w Chełmnie” w lipcu 2004. Udział zakończony otrzymanie wyróżnienia za jeden z rysunków. Chełmno to fascynujące, małe, średniowieczne miasteczko, które posiada najdłuższe istniejące mury miejskie okalające Stare Miasto (około 2200m) w Polsce. Jest jednocześnie naszpikowane kościołami, starymi kamienicami, oraz setkami malowniczych zakątków, które są idealnym tematem na plener rysunkowy lub malarski.
